Resurfacing is a thin coating system applied over your existing concrete driveway. It’s not paint, it’s not a new slab, and it’s not just a coat of sealer. It sits somewhere in between — a layered acrylic resin coating system that bonds to the slab, takes colour and texture, and finishes with a clear sealer for UV and wear protection.

The umbrella term is covercrete (also called spraycrete). The base material is the same; the product system depends on the finish. For non-stencil work — plain coloured driveways, textured or flecked finishes, anything anti-slip — I use Shieldcoat’s Step Safe Heavy Duty. For stencilled driveways (brick, cobblestone or tile patterns), the better-suited system is Dulux Avista, which we use specifically for stencil work. Two systems, picked to match the job — not one product stretched across everything.

Within those two systems sits a real range of choice — plain colours, multi-colour textured finishes, or stencilled patterns that mimic brick, tile, or cobblestone. Most clients are surprised by how much design control they actually have. That distinction matters because it’s where most of the failures come from on jobs we get called out to fix.

Advantage 1 — Roughly Half the Cost of a Full Replacement

Cost is the single biggest reason people resurface driveways. A full concrete slab replacement on the Gold Coast typically costs between $95 and $195 per square metre, including demolition, waste removal, a new pour, and a finish. Driveway resurfacing starts from $50 per square metre — so on a typical 30m² driveway, you’re often looking at roughly half the spend, sometimes less.

The reason is straightforward: there’s no demolition, no skip bins of broken concrete, no new pour and no cure time before you can use the surface. We’re working with the slab you already own. That’s where the saving comes from — not from cutting corners on the finish.

What “from $50/m²” doesn’t include is the finish itself. A plain coloured driveway sits at the bottom of the range; stencilled or multi-colour textured finishes cost more because there’s more product, more labour, and (for stencil work) the Dulux Avista system instead of Step Safe. Site condition matters too — a slab that needs serious crack repair before coating goes down will add to the quote.

Advantage 2 — Better Kerb Appeal Without Replacing the Slab

The most obvious advantage is the visual one — a faded, stained, or stencilled driveway looks new again. After 20 years of doing this work I still find that part satisfying.

The driveway is the first thing a visitor or a buyer sees. A faded, stained, or cracked one tells a story about the rest of the house before anyone gets to the front door — fairly or not. That’s the honest reason kerb appeal matters when you’re thinking about resale.

I won’t give you a specific percentage. You’ll see articles claiming a resurfaced driveway lifts your property value by 10% — no one can promise that, and the agents I talk to won’t either. What they will say is that a well-presented driveway helps a home show better at inspection, and a tired one is a fixable problem buyers tend to discount for harder than the actual repair cost. Worth doing before you list, in other words.

Colour and finish choice is where it earns its keep. The right colour complements the brickwork, render, or roof tiles — it doesn’t fight them. After 20 years of doing this on the Gold Coast and the Tweed, I lean toward mid-greys, warm neutrals, and stone-look textured finishes for most homes around here. They hold up under the UV, they don’t show every mark, and they age well next to a coastal facade.

Advantage 3 — 10 to 15 Years of Durability and P5 Slip Resistance

A properly applied resurfacing job will hold up for 10 to 15 years on a residential driveway. That’s the honest range. The product can do its part — what determines whether you land at the 10-year end or the 15-year end is prep, slab condition, and whether the job was done in the right conditions. A rushed prep on a hot, windy day will fail in three years no matter how good the coating is.

The product I use for non-stencil work is Shieldcoat’s Step Safe Heavy Duty. It carries a P5 anti-slip rating, the highest available, and performs safely even when wet — which matters more than people realise on Gold Coast driveways after a summer downpour. The premium acrylic resin behind it is crack-resistant and fade-proof, and the system carries a 7-year Shieldcoat manufacturer warranty against flaking, peeling, and cracking under normal use. UV stability is the other reason it suits Queensland. Bare concrete fades, stains, and spalls under the sun and salt air; a sealed acrylic coating doesn’t. Advantage 4 — One Day on Site, No Demolition, No Mess

The most common question I get is whether the job is going to take over the house for a week. It doesn’t. Most residential driveways are done in a day, and you’re driving on it again within 24 to 48 hours of the final sealer coat going down.

The process is five steps. We pressure-wash the slab to strip back dirt, oil and surface contaminants. Any cracks or surface damage are repaired. A bonding primer goes down. Three top coats of the chosen system follow — Step Safe Heavy Duty for non-stencil work, Dulux Avista for stencilled finishes — and the job is finished with two coats of clear sealer for UV and wear protection. There’s no demolition. No skip bins of broken concrete on the kerb. No excavation, no new pour, no week of cure time. When Resurfacing Isn’t the Right Call

Resurfacing is a coating system. It needs a stable surface underneath. If your slab is still moving — sinking sections, significant heave, or deep structural cracks running through the concrete — no coating will hold. You’d be paying to put a finish over a problem that’s going to come back through it within a year or two.
